When it comes to pitching products to journalists, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Some appreciate receiving unsolicited products, while others do not. Every journalist has a unique set of criteria for the products they review and how they like to be pitched.
Instead of trying to establish a rigid formula for pitching products, I thought it would be more effective to interview journalists in different industries about how they approach product reviews and affiliate marketing.
So, this is the first episode in which I do just that.
I recently had the honor of interviewing Carl Anthony, the Managing Editor and Co-Founder of Automoblog and AutoVision News, the host of AutoVision News Radio and AutoSens Insights, and a regular contributor on MotorMouth Radio on WHPC 90.3 FM.
Carl graciously offered to share his expertise on product reviews, roundups, and affiliate campaigns within the automotive realm.
If you look at Carl’s work on Automoblog, you’ll see he publishes thorough, in-depth reviews of products and services in the car and automotive industry
Along the way, he has established relationships with renowned brands such as Escort, Cobra Electronics, Meguiar’s, and Real Truck.
Our conversation was centered around how PR professionals can navigate and contribute to the success of affiliate campaigns in particular.
Here’s a checklist when pitching products to Automoblog:
- Research Audience: Understand the demographics, interests, and preferences of Automoblog’s audience to ensure the product aligns with their needs and interests.
- Tailor the Pitch: Craft a personalized pitch that highlights how the product fits into Automoblog’s content focus and resonates with the audience. Emphasize the unique value proposition and relevance to his platform.
- Provide Product Details: Include comprehensive product information, specifications, and features in the pitch. Be transparent about the product’s capabilities, benefits, and target audience.
- Offer Access to Experts: Provide direct access to relevant brand experts, such as engineers, product developers, or marketing professionals. This allows Carl to gather detailed information for his reviews and content.
