Welcome to Digital PR Explained, the podcast where I break down a topic in the world of digital PR in under 20 minutes. In this episode, we’re diving into the art of writing an effective pitch to be a guest on podcasts. Podcasting has become a powerful platform for increasing visibility and credibility, but standing out in a crowded inbox can be challenging. Join me as I share an example pitch and highlight the key elements that make it successful, along with tips on crafting a compelling subject line.

Steps to Consider When Pitching Podcasts:

  1. Personalize Your Pitch:
    • Address the host by name and reference specific episodes or themes of their podcast to show that you’ve done your homework.
  2. Establish Credibility:
    • Clearly state who you are and why you would be a valuable guest. Highlight any relevant credentials, achievements, or media features.
  3. Align with the Audience:
    • Explain how your expertise and content are relevant to the podcast’s audience. Provide specific examples of topics you can discuss that would interest listeners.
  4. Offer a Compelling Story:
    • Propose an intriguing episode idea that promises a compelling narrative or unique insights. Personal stories or success journeys can captivate audiences.
  5. Show Flexibility:
    • Indicate your willingness to collaborate on topics and make it clear you’re open to the host’s suggestions.
  6. Professional Closing:
    • End with a polite thank you and a friendly sign-off. Keep the tone professional and courteous throughout the pitch.
  7. Craft a Strong Subject Line:
    • Your subject line should be specific, clear, and highlight the key selling point of your pitch. Keep it concise and professional.

Example Pitch:

Subject: Guest Pitch: Robert Farrington, America’s Millennial Money Expert® for Martinis and Your Money Podcast

Hi Shannon,

If you’re accepting new guests for the ‘Martinis and Your Money’ podcast, Robert Farrington, founder of The College Investor and America’s Millennial Money and Student Loan Debt Expert®, would love to be considered.

Robert regularly writes about investing, student loan debt, and general personal finance topics geared toward anyone wanting to earn more, get out of debt, and start building their wealth for the future. His insights have been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and CNBC, and his blog, The College Investor, attracts over 1 million monthly readers.

Podcast Episode Idea: From Target Employee to CEO

Robert can share his own journey of how he successfully grew his website, The College Investor, from a side gig into a full-time career. Farrington can talk about starting his financial advice blog in 2009 while employed full-time at Target. It took him 16 months to earn any money from his blog, but he continued writing posts, and it is now his full-time job. Given your focus on financial independence and empowering your listeners to take control of their money, Robert’s insights on student loan debt and investing would resonate deeply with your audience.

We’re open to suggestions if you have other topic ideas you’d love to talk about with Robert. Thank you for considering our pitch.

Take care,

Britt
